Description

Shadows of death seems an improbable photograph to have been made in New Zealand in 1940. Its construction of a formally ambiguous image from a sharply focused everyday scene suggests the New Photography of Europe in the 1920s and 1930s rather than the soft-focused and sentimental framework of pictorialism then prevailing in New Zealand photography.
