Text originally created for Tūrangawaewae: Art and New Zealand exhibition at Te Papa, March 2018. A mother in her early old age, painted for a faraway son. In 1770, John Greenwood wrote from London to his childhood friend, the famous Boston artist John S Copley, to commission a portrait of his mother: ‘I am very desirous of seeing the good lady’s face as she now appears, with old age creeping upon her.’ Greenwood never did see his mother again – but the cherished memento later voyaged with h...
