What is DigitalNZ?

DigitalNZ (part of National Library of New Zealand in the Department of Internal Affairs) makes New Zealand's digital content easier to find, share and use. Like our Australian counterpart, Trove, we aggregate metadata from many digital collections and make it available in one place. We bring together the metadata of more than 29 million digital items, from nearly 200 content partners, and over 300 collections. DigitalNZ provides a search across all of those items and, importantly for GovHack, enables others to develop new and exciting things using our open and easy to use API.

How to use the DigitalNZ API:

The data available through DigitalNZ describes the digital items held by our nearly 200 content partners from across all walks of NZ life. You can use the APIs to search across the likes of titles, descriptions, dates, and creators of the material; as well as requesting thumbnails and the full metadata record for each item.

The aggregation service collects only the metadata that describes the digital content, but these APIs also return pointers to the item objects and thumbnails put online by our fantastic content partners.

For detailed useful infomation and documentation, including how to get started with your own api_key check out our  developers' documentation. There is a showcase of existing API implementations to inspire you . Don't forget to have a good read of the API Terms of Use to get a clear understanding of how you can use the API. Contact us at develop@digitalnz.org or @digitalnz if you're after any help.

Especially for GovHack:

SDK/Client Libraries

APIMatic have set up a range of SDKs/Client Libraries for DigitalNZ especially for GovHack. You lucky things!

WW1

There is a wide range of  New Zealand World War One related content available on DigitalNZ. We have compiled a list of helpful links and resources at WWI API Examples.

The New Zealand Gazette

The New Zealand Gazette data, right back to 1993, has been brought into DigitalNZ especially for GovHack. This means you can now dive into the data depths of the official newspaper of Government and authoritative journal of constitutional record. This includes commercial and government notices, business proceedings, parliamentary notices and notifications from government departments and agencies. You can also access data related to special editions, including the New Year and Queen’s Birthday Honours Lists, Professional and Trade Lists, including the Valuers, Marriage and Civil Union Celebrants Registers.

Visit the New Zealand Gazette for more information about what the New Zealand Gazette Office publishes and when. The DigitalNZ API documentation gives you all the details on how to get to the data.   There is information about the data licensing on the New Zealand Gazette's copyright page.
